What is a Mandala?

Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘completion’, or ‘essence’, which is derived from the Tibetan term Dkyil Khor. It is a concentric diagram that has spiritual and ritual significance in both Buddhism and Hinduism. Mandalas are used as a focus for meditation, to induce trance, as a spiritual teaching tool, or for blessing a sacred space. More recently the Mandala has come to represent the cosmos both metaphysically and symbolically, a microcosm representing divine powers at work in the Universe.

In Buddhism the purpose of a mandala is to put an end to human suffering, to attain enlightenment and a correct view of Reality. It is a means to discover divinity by the realization that it resides within one's own self.

In America the First Nations use the Medicine Wheel in a similar way, and in the Western world the mandala is used in churches in Rose Windows.

According to David Fontana, its symbolic nature can help one "to access progressively deeper levels of the unconscious, ultimately assisting the meditator to experience a mystical sense of oneness with the ultimate unity from which the cosmos in all its manifold forms arises."

Carl Jung saw the mandala as ‘a representation of the unconscious self’ and believed his paintings of mandalas enabled him to identify emotional disorders and work towards wholeness in personality.

Personal Mandala's

Evelyn also uses the mandala as a healing tool. By tuning into a person's spirit, aligning with their inner being or soul, Evelyn is able to create a mandala completely unique and personal to that individual. The mandala can then be used as a focus for healing as it represents the essence of the persons soul, enabling one to realign with their inner being and bringing themselves back into alignment with their true selves, thus healing on all levels. At the very least the mandalas created are beautiful and uplifting to look at!

Personal mandalas can be created from photographs of flowers, trees, crystals, sacred places, sacred buildings, or virtually anything that resonates with each person. Evelyn will take a photo of the object that is to be transformed into the mandala, or a person may ask for a specific thing that they resonate with, or that brings them deep peace. You may also provide your own special photograph which Evelyn can then make into your own special mandala.

Instead of flowers for Mothers' Day, why not a mandala of your mothers favourite flower -

...it won't die after just a few days, but will last a lifetime!
